Then becoming a Leeds driving instructor might just be exactly what you are looking for.
There is a large backlog of people interested in learning to drive, which makes it a perfect time to become a driving instructor. It doesn’t matter if you do not have any previous driving instructor experience. The only requirements are that you must be at least 21 years old, have held a full driving licence for at least 3 years, have not had more than 5 points on your license in the last 4 years, and want to work in a job that allows you to have control of your life, earn a better living, or do what you love.
Before becoming a driving instructor, you should read through the official DVSA guidelines. Driving instructor training will usually take about 12 months. Your training will take a minimum of 6 months to complete, that is if you pass everything on your first attempt, which is highly unlikely.

You must pass three DVSA driving instructor tests to be approved by the DVSA. To ensure that instructors have the ability to teach others how to drive, the tests are rigorous. To become a qualified driving instructor, you must have the same commitment as any adult learning program. If you have the right attitude to succeed as a driving instructor, there’s no reason why your test scores will not be passes.
Part 1: Theory, Hazard Perception
You must pass both the theory and practical tests in this part of your qualification process. The first part of the qualification process you will be given 1.5 hours to complete 100 multiple-choice questions. You will then be given 30 minutes to watch 14 hazard perception videos and spot the developing hazards as soon they occur.
The theory test will assess your knowledge about the Highway Code, driving techniques, general road safety, first aid knowledge, and theory of instructing pupils. The test lasts for 90 minutes. You must score both an overall score of 85 and a minimum of 20 in each category to pass.
Passing the hazard perception test requires that you score at minimum 57 out 75. To pass Part 1, both tests must be passed.
Part 2: Driving Ability
The advanced practical driving exam will test your driving skills and knowledge of the Highway Code. The advanced driving test takes one hour to complete and covers five parts: eyesight, vehicle safety, general driving abilities, manoeuvres and independent driving.
You must not make more than six driving errors and no serious or dangerous faults in order to pass the Part 2 Driving Ability Test.
After passing your driving proficiency test, you are granted your Part Qualified Instructor (PQI), which permits you to begin teaching lessons before you take your final Instructional Ability Test.
Now you can start earning a living teaching driving. Your PQI license is only valid for six months.
Part 3: Instructional Ability Exam
One of your customers will receive a 1 hour driving lesson while a DVSA examiner monitors you. Your student can either be a learner driver or a full licence holder. The examiner will want to see evidence that the you meet the national standard for driver and rider training in the 17 areas. These areas can be broken down into three categories: risk management, lesson planning, and teaching and learning strategies.
After the exam, your performance will be discussed with the examiner. They will also give you your Part 3 test report and your result. Passing the exam requires either a grade A or B.
Part 3 is a test that you must pass to become an approved driving instructor on the DVSA register. This will allow you to apply to receive your first ADI badge. If you fail the test you can retake it within 2 years after passing your Part 1.
After initially qualifying, you’ll need to pass another part 3 exam within six months. The standards check (the part 3-test) is required every 2 to 4-years.
Part 2 and 3 are limited to three attempts so it is important that you choose the right school before starting to train to become a driving instructor. If you fail the third attempt, you will have to wait until two years after the date on which you passed part 1.

There is now, unfortunately, a national shortage of driving instructors not just due to the unprecedented demand but also because possibly as many as 15 percent of the nation's instructors have left the industry as a result of the pandemic.
Most driving instructors are self-employed and as such are normally sole traders. They take all the risks and as such are able to keep all the business profits.
The average annual mileage is around 30000 (to compare this to average mileage on small cars used for pleasure at around 10000 this is very high). So on average as instructors we may have to change our cars every 3 years or so… the costs on buying add up all the time.
Expenses Will Cut into Your Earnings as an Instructor There is no way around it. A driving instructor is a business and a business naturally has expenses. One of the biggest expenses for a driving instructor week to week (excluding franchise fees) is usually fuel costs.
