Pass Plus & Motorway Questions
Straight answers to common questions about post-pass coaching.
Do I actually need Pass Plus after passing my test?
Pass Plus is not a legal requirement, but the skills it covers — motorways, dual carriageways, night driving, and rural roads — are exactly what new drivers find most daunting. Whether you take a full Pass Plus course or targeted single sessions on specific scenarios, the coaching builds confidence in the real-world conditions that are absent from the standard learner syllabus.
What will I actually do on a motorway lesson?
Your first motorway session begins with a briefing on joining via slip roads, maintaining safe following distances at speed, lane discipline, and planned exits. You won't be thrown straight onto a busy stretch — your instructor joins the motorway with you, coaches overtakes and lane changes, and debriefs on each decision. Most pupils are pleasantly surprised by how straightforward motorway driving feels with proper preparation.
Can I do Pass Plus in my own car?
Yes, as long as your car meets DVSA requirements: valid insurance covering a qualified ADI as a supervising driver, and the car must be roadworthy and MOT-valid. Many post-pass pupils prefer to use their own vehicle since the goal is building confidence in the car they will actually be driving independently. Discuss this when you enquire and we will confirm the requirements.
Can I do motorway lessons in an automatic?
Absolutely. All our Pass Plus and motorway sessions are available in both manual and automatic. If you passed in automatic and are now driving an automatic car, there is no reason to switch — the motorway skills (lane choice, speed management, safe gaps, planned exits) are equally applicable to both transmission types.
How many sessions do I need to build confidence?
That depends entirely on your starting confidence level and which specific scenarios you want to work on. A single focused motorway session can make a significant difference for someone who just wants to tackle that one concern. A full Pass Plus-style programme covering six modules — town driving, all-weather, night, rural, dual carriageways, and motorway — typically takes four to six hours spread over a few sessions. We tailor the plan to you.
Can you help if I am anxious about fast roads?
Yes — this is one of the most common reasons people enquire about post-pass coaching. We start at whatever level you are comfortable with and build up gradually. Some pupils want to start on a quieter dual carriageway before progressing to a motorway. We never rush progression; your comfort and building genuine competence are the goal, not ticking boxes at speed.
Do you offer night driving sessions?
Yes. Night driving is a standard component of Pass Plus and is available as a standalone session. We cover hazard perception in reduced visibility, headlight management, dealing with oncoming lights, and reading road markings when they are the primary guide. Sessions are scheduled at dusk or after dark depending on the season.
Will I go on the motorway in my very first session?
Not unless you are already confident and specifically request it. The standard approach is to begin with an assessment drive — your instructor evaluates your current road positioning, speed management, and observation habits — before progressing to dual carriageways and then motorways. Rushing this progression serves no one; the goal is genuine readiness, not speed of progression.
I have not driven in several months. Should I do a refresher first?
If it has been more than two or three months since you last drove, a refresher session before tackling motorways is strongly recommended. The first session focuses on re-bedding in core car-control and observation habits before introducing fast-road scenarios. This is not an admission of failure — it is simply the most efficient route back to confidence.
Is Pass Plus the same as an insurance discount?
Pass Plus was originally designed in part to attract insurance discounts, and some insurers do offer a reduction. However, the discount is not guaranteed and has become less consistent over time as insurers have developed their own telematics-based alternatives. The primary value of Pass Plus is the genuine skill and confidence it develops — any insurance benefit is a welcome bonus rather than the main purpose.
